How To Stay Sober: Tips for Getting and Staying Sober

Published

on

Many more modern “sobriety programs” exist that are suitable solutions for people seeking sobriety with others without the issues mentioned above, such as SMART Recovery. There are also many online support groups full of friendly strangers ready to cheer you on, answer your questions, and support you without judgment. Shout out toSoberPunks Gang – The Quit Drinking Club. I’ve also witnessed the fantastic potential and empowerment that often emerges by building relationships with people in recovery. Extraordinary magic comes with being in the company of people that are in the process of growing beyond what they knew they could ever be capable of. Anyway, I do wish AA was better organised and like someone said above, I wish people were held more accountable for their actions. I had my anonymity broke and a very personal thing about me gossiped about in local meetings. And the reason was that ‘some people are more sick than others’. But that’s only the tip of the iceberg, as they say.

One of the best parts of the 12-step program was that I felt welcomed into a community of people like me. I met people who knew the devastation of hardcore drinking, as well as the joys of living alcohol-free. I may not go to meetings anymore, but I still keep in touch with these kinds of people. One study found that mutual support groups can be as effective as 12-step programs and may help improve the odds of success for people who are committed to maintaining a lifetime of total abstinence.

What Percentage Of Alcoholics Stay Sober?

I have been interested in this topic since I got sober—often doing my own online research—and I have never heard anyone talk about this conundrum. But I think it’s an important factor to understanding long-term recovery. Even though AA hasn’t been the route I’ve taken, I agree that it works if you work it. If you are committed to finding the addiction treatment, therapies, or plans that work best for you, you will have a better chance at success. For many people with a substance use disorder, it’s simply a matter of never having learned the appropriate way to manage anger. Talk to your therapist, other healthcare provider, or sponsor about how to deal with your anger in ways that won’t cause you to harm yourself or others or turn to alcohol or drugs.

(It was also cheaper than coffee or tea.) The historian W. J. Rorabaugh has estimated that between the 1770s and 1830s, the average American over age 15 consumed at least five gallons of pure alcohol a year—the rough equivalent of three shots of hard liquor a day. Less than 1 percent of people treated for alcohol problems in the United States are prescribed naltrexone or any other drug shown to help control drinking. Finland’s treatment model is based in large part on the work of an American neuroscientist named John David Sinclair. He was battling late-stage prostate cancer, and his thick white hair was cropped short in preparation for chemotherapy. Sinclair has researched alcohol’s effects on the brain since his days as an undergraduate at the University of Cincinnati, where he experimented with rats that had been given alcohol for an extended period.

Despite this, they entered the study that would change most of their lives. Building and maintaining a sober lifestyle often means assessing your relationships and whether they help your alcohol or drug recovery. Making new friends that understand your situation and distancing yourself from friends that may encourage you to drink is a complex but essential step in the lifelong process of recovery. You see, I have bipolar disorder and AA attendance & “guidance” prevented me from getting a correct dx and treatment. If there was a god, all the praying I did never removed it. Just woke up and decided to not live that way anymore. It was not until I was 6yrs into program where I sought treatment for BP. Positively, the early years in AA taught me about how to assess my behavior, discover who I am, and how to not drink and avoid the problems that pushed me to drink. I am truly not a person that can drink now or a little or “some day”.

The program is meant to be ‘a program of attraction, not promotion’ and I sure as hell am not attracted to any of it anymore. There was a time I needed AA but all I wanted was to get rid of the drinking. I don’t care a damn about the rest of what happens in life. I also sure as hell don’t want what AA has to offer, which is another one of these cliches they often spout. I had a good go at being in AA, but I have never really felt like I fitted in. However, I am thankful that it is there and if I ever encounter someone who I think would benefit from going to meetings and stopping drinking, I would gladly take them. I struggle with the idea that these people are totally accountable to a god that they cannot define or know what it wants.

He poured coffee and showed me around the clinic, in downtown Helsinki. The most common course of treatment involves six months of cognitive behavioral therapy, a goal-oriented form of therapy, with a clinical psychologist. Treatment typically also includes a physical exam, blood work, and a prescription for naltrexone or nalmefene, a newer opioid antagonist approved in more than two dozen countries. When I asked how much all of this cost, Keski-Pukkila looked uneasy.

I feel like if i drink again it will get bad and i would or could die and or kill somebody else in a car wreck and end up in jail. If I do end up drinking and it gets bad, I hope nothing happens to me or anybody else, and I would have another Sober Home chance at AA. Some feel like that is reason enough to keep on going to meetings forever. I still don’t like going to meetings so I made a choice to not go and not drink. They are best for people who have a high motivation to recover and cannot leave their responsibilities at home, work, or school. Today, my life is full of people whose lives don’t revolve around consuming booze. The yucky way alcohol makes me feel is reason enough not to drink. I avoid refined sugar and processed foods because of how crummy my body feels after eating them — why should alcohol be any different? In addition, I practice secular Buddhism, which encourages its practitioners to abstain from alcohol.

Healthy Habits

AA has been around since before the 1940s and has helped many women achieve sobriety. Good support and the right mentality is a crucial part of recovery. AA certainly provides that to those who decide to join the fellowship. A low level of drinking is different for men and women. Women should strive to drink no more than three drinks on any given day. Women should limit themselves to seven drinks per week.

You will find that long-term sobriety is possible when you focus on the daily process instead of the long-term end goal. This can include attendance at AA meetings and possible work with a sponsor. Take one step at a time and break everything into shorter goals. Look at sobriety in stages, from detox to addiction treatment to sober living to everyday life. Fortunately for me, I have spent quite a bit of time developing relationships and building a bit of a life outside of rooms. Generally speaking, I just don’t want to be around this cult like behaviour anymore with people telling me that God got me sober for a reason and I should do what they tell me to. These narrow minded people are sicker than the real people I prefer being around.

What happens to your emotions when you stop drinking?

Alcohol use overloads the brain with dopamine, while also reducing the brain's dopamine receptors in the process. When you first quit drinking, the lack of dopamine and diminished receptors can lead to feelings of sadness and hopelessness.

At no point did I feel a craving to drink more. Of all the things I learned from AA, one thing I know for sure is that drinking and me don’t mix. Eight years later, this is something I don’t question. Without a doubt, going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and being a part of the fellowship saved my life. There are a couple different ways to make an oyster shooter. Most of them involve an oyster swimming in its own juice or tomato juice, though sometimes it’s cocktail sauce. Usually there’s a lemon wedge and some hint of Tabasco — and yes, there’s usually at least a little booze.
